The Kamberg experience
Kamberg Nature reserve is a short drive from Antbear Lodge and is a day out that is very worth while. The drive to the reserve is pretty. On arriving there is a short video that explains the bushman and some of the symbolism that you are about to see. You will meet your guide who will take you up to Game Pass Shelter where you can view these very spiritual paintings first hand. The hike is about 7km in each direction and is particularly pretty with waterfalls and wild flowers.
Kamberg Nature Reserve
Kamberg Nature Reserve is located in the foothills of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park , its central position ideal for visits to many other well known Drakensberg areas like Giants Castle.Kamberg Nature Reserve has three attractive picnic sites near the river and trout dams. A fly fishing permit is obtainable from the reception office. Trout fishing can be enjoyed in the many dams which are open to anglers all year round and in the river during the fly fishing season. Close to Kamberg are the trophy trout fishing dams of Highmoor which must be booked in advance.
Bushman rock art at Kamberg
The new Rock Art Centre showcases the magnificent San paintings in the Game Pass shelter. Community guides take visitors to this shelter on a daily basis. Kamberg Rock Art Centre is where the first South African rock art was found, then introduced to the world and featured in the Scientific American in 1915.
Activities in the Nature Reserve
- The reserve is particularly scenic, and there are numerous walks throughout the area as well as a delightful picnic site near the river. There are also two self-guided trails, one of which is suitable for the handicapped. The starting point for this trail is at the picnic site.
- Apart from the Mooi River, and subject to the normal season, trout fishing is available in several dams which are open to anglers all year round.
- Wildlife occurring in the reserve includes reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, blesbok, black wildebeest, grey rhebuck, eland, duiker, red hartebeest and oribi.
